Wee Care Is Special!

What makes Wee Care special and unique?

Inclusion

In the beginning, Wee Care was a segregated setting. Wee Care served a population of children who had physical challenges initially stemming from a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy.

It didn’t take long before the community of care recognized the benefits of integration with typically developing peers. The rest as they say is history.

Ratios

At Wee Care, we have higher teacher to child ratios than required by provincial regulations. In our infant room. there is a maximum of 10 children and 3 teachers.

In our toddler and preschool rooms in the centre, there are a maximum of 12 children, with a teaching team of 2 teachers and one teaching assistant.

Our pre-school program housed at Veith House is also staffed with 2 teachers and a teaching assistant but with 14 children.

Diversity

From the staff to the children, there is a wide diversity in the population of our community. That diversity extends to the menu options, learning opportunities and beyond.

Therapy Team

Music, physical and occupational therapist are on site. All children at the centre benefit from our team of part-time therapists.

Our team brings music appreciation to each classroom utilizing a variety of instruments with the children having the ability to play along. In conjunction with the music or alone we also participate in tai chi and mindfulness.

Our special needs children receive one on one attention or small group therapy exercises or adjustments to the equipment they use.

History of success

Since 1973, Wee Care Developmental Centre has been providing specialized care to an ever growing population. From humble beginnings serving 4-5 children, we now care for an average of 80 full and part time children with 22 staff members, countless volunteers and students.

Wee Care has survived a forced closure and had to rebuild, a fire which destroyed that building and we had to rebuild to our current facility. Remarkably, despite the inconvenience, Wee Care was not closed for more than one week before setting up shop in a temporary location. That’s dedication!

Our Staff

Wee Care is proud to boast that it maintains a high retention level for staff. In fact there are staff members here who have been with the centre for 10-15 years. One has been proud to serve for 35 years and still going.

But we also attract a number of staff new to the field who are excited to put their new found knowledge to helping the children maximize their abilities with respect and dignity.

The staff at Wee Care is as diverse as the community and children it serves. From fresh out of school, or still furthering their education to our most senior staff, there is a cohesion amongst them. The goal is the same, to help each and every child maximize their abilities with respect and dignity for all.
