The Therapy Team at Wee Care consists of an occupational therapist, physical therapist and two music therapists. These folks are all part-time with Wee Care but they do cross paths and work in conjunction with each other. The Therapy team is not government funded and the services are dependent on the availability of funds and personnel.
Physical Therapy:
Our physical therapist works with children (usually one on one) with stretching, general mobility, strengthening. Proper seating positions and recommending equipment if necessary.
The therapists work closely with the staff to ensure the safety and security of the children as they utilize equipment like standers, walkers, special chairs and body positions.
This service is provided free to families pending the availability of funds and personnel.
Occupational Therapy:
Our occupational therapist works with children (usually one on one) with feeding, fine motor skills, proper equipment that will help them with skills, referrals to specialists. They collaborate closely with Physical Therapists, the staff and the families.
Practicing Tai Chi along with body awareness and mood control and expression is also a part of the occupational therapy. Mind, body and spirit.
Subject to staffing and availability.
Music Therapy:
We are very fortunate that our musical therapists are provided free to the families through the kind generosity of the Edwards Family Foundation.
All children in the centre benefit from our music therapists as they ensure that they spend time with each classroom every week. The children sing, or listen and learn new songs, revisit old songs and have a chance to experiment with different instruments. They explore the sounds and techniques used to make noise and music with instruments that are not necessarily the common variety.
Music therapists will also take children for one-on-one sessions and use music to find outlets for emotional or behavioural regulation. They also collaborate with the other therapists to provide music as a calming measure or a motivator for exercises. Practicing mobility with a marching band keeping time!
