Arrival and Departure

Wee Care opens at 7 am and closes at 5:30 pm Monday to Friday, except for statutory holidays. With the exception of occasional appointments and other events, it is preferable that all children are ready to start the day with us by 9:30 am. Programming and special activities will begin at this time.
Eating time
Our cook prepares 2 snacks and a lunch for the children. The food is placed on trolley’s that are wheeled to the individual classrooms. Most dietary restrictions and allergies can be accommodated with modifications to the main menu. In some cases, parents will have to bring in substitutions.
Snacks and lunch are eaten in the classroom with staff seated at the tables with the children in “family style” dining. Toddlers and older children are encouraged to clean up their dirty dishes and garbage after eating.
Using a combination of words and simple sign language, even our non-verbal children can indicate when they are “all done” or want “more”.
Nap and Rest Time
Nap/rest times occur in the classroom and children sleep on cots that only they sleep on. Beds and bedding are not shared. Children are encouraged to bring a comfort object and blanket to help them to settle on their cots for a rest. Infants sleep in cribs that are likewise not shared. Nap/rest period is generally from 12pm to 2pm, with significant variances depending on the age of the children.

Under the Nova Scotia Early Learning and Child Care Act, all licensed child care programs must provide a) a daily rest period for children under age 5 and b) a quiet time option for children who no longer nap. During quiet time for the older children, they sit on their cots with a quiet activity or book.
Activities
Classrooms are equipped with age-appropriate furniture and toys to encourage all types of play. This includes dramatic, creative, sensory, construction, library area and other specialized spaces.
Also scheduled into the weekly activities are music time (directed by our very own music therapists), gym time, Snoezelen time and of course all manners of outdoor play.
Neighbourhood walks and community visits are also a very important part of Wee Care life.
