Hi! I’m Katie!
I didn’t take the most traditional route to the field of childcare – but I’m so glad to be here! I grew
up in Ottawa as the child of two teachers, and first came to Halifax in 2012. I went to Dal and
majored in Political Science and French before moving back to Ottawa to do a Masters in
Communication and Media Studies from Carleton. After two years of focusing on queer
representation in television, we decided it was time to move back to the ocean. While waiting to
defend my thesis, I picked up some work looking after a friend’s child after school. That’s when I
realized that THIS is what I’m supposed to be doing!
I bailed on the thesis defense and found work with multiple families in the neighbourhood,
looking after kiddos from newborns to 10 year olds. I then decided to go back to school and
have since gotten another degree from the Mount in Child and Youth Studies. One of my
practicums was here at Wee Care! I then worked for a few years at another local daycare as a
member of the inclusion team.
I love working with kids and understanding their unique needs and learning how best to support
each child as individuals. As trusted grownups, I believe it’s super important to look at
everything from an anti-racist, anti-ableist, and gender inclusive lens. I am fluent in both English
and French, and practice using ASL – though I’d love to add more languages to my repertoire
based on the home languages of the children in our care.
I am grateful to get to live in the community in which I work, and live nearby with my wife and
our pets Turnip, lil monster, and Nibbler.
